About This Quote

A kiss without a moustache, they said then, is like an egg without salt; I will add to it: and it is like Good without Evil. This is a quote from a book by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. In the story, a man breaks into a home and kills a man who has been sleeping with his wife. The husband’s response is to ask the burglar to sleep with his wife as repayment for the murder.

This quote is saying that there can be no goodness before evil as he puts it, as it is impossible to do good without first doing evil. In other words, if you do good first, then you have already done evil and therefore must do more of it to repay the debt you owe because you have first done something bad.
